A cinematic biopic of Britney Spears is en route to the silver screen.
Announced on Thursday, Universal Pictures has secured the rights to Spears’ bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me, in what is being described as a “fiercely competitive auction.” Renowned director Jon M. Chu (Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians) is set to direct.
The GRAMMY winner’s memoir, released last October, has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States alone. In the book, Spears chronicles her ascent to pop superstardom, from her early days in The Mickey Mouse Club through her highly publicized and scrutinized conservatorship, which caused a rift between the “Toxic” singer and her sister Jamie Lynn Spears, mother Lynne Spears, and father Jamie Spears. The audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams, was the most listened-to audiobook on Spotify in 2023.
Producing the project is Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land). Spears is particularly thrilled to be collaborating with Platt, whose film, television, and stage productions have garnered a combined 46 Oscar nominations, 48 Emmy nominations, and 36 Tony nominations.
Spears shared the news of her “secret project” on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. She tweeted, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.”
